Lucile's Creole Cafe: "Best Breakfast in Boulder"
www.luciles.com/flash/
Back in July OL/Luna Negra played the Boulder Theater. Shortly after, Ottmar had posted in his journal an entry about going out for breakfast to his favorite place in Boulder. Well, dummy me didn’t write it down and then I couldn’t find the entry later. Long story short, I cried about it in the “Ottmar Liebert Bookshop” thread and OL stopped by the forum in late August and dropped me the name of the restaurant. I could hardly wait to get back up to Boulder and try it out!
Normally, my wife and I wouldn’t drive an hour and a half to go to breakfast. “But it’s Ottmar’s favorite place”, I begged my wife, “AND it’s the best breakfast in Boulder!” Well, it didn’t take too much convincing. After all, my wife is a good sport when it comes to my obsession with “everything Ottmar” and besides that Boulder is a cool town with lots of good shopping – something for everyone! So yesterday (Saturday, Sept. 11) we headed out early for a day of fun in Boulder.
Now, I must admit I was a little skeptical that a “Creole Café” would be a great breakfast spot because I’m thinking “What, gumbo for breakfast??” Well, I’ll get to that in a bit, but first the actual restaurant… It’s on the same street as the Boulder Theater just a block away. The restaurant is in a turn of the century vintage house – very quaint. They don’t take reservations so when we saw the crowd waiting out front we figured we were in for a long wait. Not so, we were seated in about 10 minutes!
Inside Lucile’s the ambiance is intimate. The rooms are somewhat small and the décor plays to the Creole/New Orleans theme. On a Saturday morning with every seat filled the place was actually a bit loud, people were obviously enjoying themselves! The staff was very friendly and efficient and in no time we were enjoying… what else, beignets and chicory coffee - Yum!!! By the way, we’re “beignet novices” so we had fun getting powdered sugar all over the place!
No gumbo for breakfast but the menu isn’t exactly “run of the mill” breakfast fare either! (Check out the menu by clicking here: www.luciles.com/flash/menu.html) So many good sounding choices… My wife decided on the “Eggs New Orleans” and I went for the “Eggs Jennifer”. We both love grits and you rarely see them on a menu in Colorado – bonus for us. Now, I must admit that neither of us has been to New Orleans and we don’t have much experience with Creole cuisine for comparison. But I will say that our food was perfectly prepared and everything tasted phenomenal! Well, what did you expect from “The Best Breakfast in Boulder”? My mouth is watering just remembering it!
If you’re ever in Boulder then definitely check out Lucile’s – I know we’ll be back! Besides, are you going to waste your time looking for “The Second-best Breakfast in Boulder”?! Also, from this outing I’d say that if OL recommends a restaurant then it’s good as gold!
Hey, I even took a couple pictures – just in case you were skeptical we were actually there. However, I don’t own a digital camera. (I’m the one geek I know who’s the last to own new gadgets.) I dropped off my film today so by the time it gets sent to Mars for processing and back it will be at least a few days – but the pictures are coming!
